Which mortar rake do you need?

• Angle grinder - a mortar raking blade is the fastest way through long runs of bed joint. 115 mm and 125 mm, in 6, 8 and 10 mm thicknesses to match your joint width.
• Drill or grinder, awkward joints - a mortar rake bit or raking pin routes both horizontal and vertical joints and gets into perp ends a blade cannot reach.
• Starting from scratch - the diamond mortar rake starter kit and the repointing starter kit pair the rake with a depth-adjustable dust guard.

How deep should you rake?

Rake to roughly twice the joint width - typically 15-20 mm on a standard 10 mm bed joint. Too shallow and the new pointing will not key and will fall out within a few winters; too deep and you risk the brick arrises. A guard with an adjustable depth stop, like the one in the VR750 raking kit, sets it once and holds it across the whole wall.

Dust is the part people underestimate

Raking mortar dry releases respirable crystalline silica, and on site on-tool extraction is a legal duty rather than good practice. Fit a dust extraction guard to an M-class vacuum - it also keeps the joint visible while you work, which makes for a straighter rake.
